La Grave is Located in the Southern Part of the French Alpes at the edge of the Parc National des Ecrins, about 70 km from Grenoble.Mont Blanc and Chamonix are about 100 km to the northeast.

For a place that feels so remote, La Grave is very easy to get to. It is a short 2 hour drive from Grenoble, and Grenoble is easily accessed by TGV (high-speed train) in a few hours from Paris. Round trip from Paris to Grenoble by train cost us about US$80. Our hotel picked us up from the train station in Grenoble for a minor fee.

We stayed at La Chaumine largely because I found it on the web and they offered complete packages which included all meals, ski tickets, guides and transfers. This seemed like a good choice for our first trip because everything is arranged by the hotel, but it does mean that you have to follow their schedule and you lose some flexibility in what you can choose to ski. Also note that La Chaumine is not in the town of La Grave, but a 20 minute bus ride up the hill. Again this may or may not be a big deal for you depending on what type of experience you are looking for.

We enjoyed La Chaumine a great deal, it was a warm and friendly place with fantastic food and an unmatched view of the mountain.

It would be perfectly feasible to stay in the town of La Grave and hire a guide from the local Bureau des Guides, but this probably won't save you much money over a package deal like that offered by La Chaumine.
