A sculpture that explores the interaction between people, mobile devices, and public spaces.

In ColorCall, a large public sculpture defines a space with 15 columns in a 3x5 grid. Each column consists of 5 stacked 50x50x50 cm translucent white cubes. Red, green, and blue LED's in the cubes allow them to glow in any color. A message on each lightcube advertises the sculptures web address:
change my color with your phone: www.colorcall.org
light ID: 352
Visiting the site on their web enabled mobile phone, a spectator becomes a collaborator by changing the color of a lightcube.

Discussion:
Internet enabled mobile phones and PDA's are the universal "universal remote". Any object or system that is connected to the internet can be modified via a handheld device. Systems that are already "online" simply need a new user interface for mobile devices.
Urban spaces, from streets and parks to shopping malls and cinemas are typically beyond the control of visitors. Mobile devices enable visitors to potentially interact and modify properties such as the brightness of the lighting, the thermostat setting, the volume of music, etc. Input from each visitor can be synthesized with the previous inputs to arrive at a final value.
The result is a collective anonymous decision from the people who actually use a space, rather than a standard norm value.
The technology to communicate with the urban environment is already in the hands of the people, now the urban environment builders need to react and give them the opportunity.
